Let's talk about oral hygiene. This is so easy and takes such a tiny amount of time that not doing these things is just dumb.
Here we go:
- Flossing - Every night, you should be flossing. Why? There are tiny bits of food on and in between your teeth. This food is not harmless...no...it creates bacteria which breaks down tooth enamel and makes your breath smell gross. This takes only one minute!
- Brushing - Duh! Every night, you should be brushing your teeth. Of course, most experts say you should brush twice a day but if you are only going to brush once, it should be at night. Why? Those food particles we talked about above are the enemy. They are teeth killers and will make your breath smell really bad. Get rid of them! By the way, you should brush the top, front, and back of every tooth. Hit those front teeth over and over to get them shiny and white. Don't skimp on toothpaste either. It does not cost that much so put a good amount on the brush. Oh yeah, this should take only three minutes!
- Mouthwash - Rinse with mouthwash every morning. You should not go anywhere unless this is done. Why? Mouthwash will kill bacteria, help get rid of those disgusting food particles we keep talking about, and reduce bad breath. The best way to make sure you do it is by adding this to your routine (like a system rather than a goal). For example, you could easily do this while you shower. Add a small bottle of mouthwash to your shower bag. When you get in the shower, fill your mouth with mouthwash. While you are washing your hair, swish it around. Hold it at the top and bottom of your mouth for a few seconds. The burning you may feel is the death of bacteria. Keep swishing. After about a minute, spit it out into the shower and you are all set.
- Fruits and veggies - Eat fresh, firm fruits and vegetables to keep your mouth healthy. The high water content in fruit and vegetables like apples and carrots stimulates your saliva, which helps prevent bad breath.
- Drink some tea! - The polyphenols in green tea can prevent cavities and bad breath, while reducing inflammation and the pain and swelling associated with gum disease.
- Bonus - Again, experts say to brush and rinse twice a day. If you are going out, you should do a quick brush (one lap around should do it) and mouthwash as well. This will make your teeth a little brighter which may help impress someone. If you are going to be in close proximity to someone for extended periods (think car ride, movie, study group), this is especially important. Have some gum handy too but don't make the mistake of thinking that chewing gum is going to take care of steps 1-3.
So, in summary, oral hygiene takes less than five minutes. It is just lazy to not do these things. Oh yeah, and this takes more time but get your teeth cleaned a the dentist twice a year.
