Nairobi, Kenya Travel Facts

Welcome to Nairobi, Kenya!

Let’s Dance!

Languages - English and Swahili are the official languages of Kenya, although as many as 62 different languages are spoken here. Despite all this diversity, Kenya practices a community-based approach to life, summed up by the Swahili word “harambee,” which means “to pull together.”

Music - Along with their many spoken languages, Kenyans use music and dance to communicate.

Dance - One traditional dance, called mwomboko, is usually performed by older Kenyans to commemorate historic events. Flutes and “jingles,” which produce a metallic, rhythmic sound, are used to accompany the dance.

Another dance, called the adumu, is a sort of courtship dance. In this dance, Maasai men form a circle, entering the center one at a time to dance to the song’s rhythm. The higher and more graceful a dancer jumps, the more likely he is to appeal to the young women watching from outside the circle.

The women have their dances too. The kilumi is a drum song and dance performed by women from the Kamba community, usually at weddings. And the chakacha dance, common in the Swahili coastal region, is traditionally performed and watched by women.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Kenya provides spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak.
The mountain made famous by American author Ernest Hemingway
is situated on Kenya’s southern border, but is more often accessed from the Tanzania side.

Fun Fact: Kenya is home to the Great Wildebeest Migration,
in which some 2 million animals move each year from the Serengeti in Tanzania to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

Male logic joke

*This is a story which is perfectly logical to all males:*   A wife asks her husband, "Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6."   A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk.  The wife asks him, "Why the hell did you buy 6 cartons of milk?"   He replied, "They had eggs."

Earth's wobble causes global warming

EARTH’S WOBBLE CAUSES GLOBAL WARNING, NOT CO2 EMISSIONS OR OCEAN CURRENTS, PER TEAM HEADED BY OSU RESEARCHER Digital Journal, “Debate Ends on Central Cause of Earth’s Cooling & Warming,” 8 Aug 2009; Space Daily, “Ice Ages Linked to Slight Shifts in Solar Radiation,” 24 Aug 2009; The Kiplinger Letter, “Climate Change Legislation, What it Means to Business,” 18 Aug 2009. As the carbon dioxide management bill - aka cap and trade - looms in Congress, a new study from Oregon State University emerges that ends the scientific debate on the central causes of ice ages and warming periods on Earth. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is fond of saying that the scientific debate on global warming is over - and while he may now be correct in the fact that a debate has come to an end, the central cause behind climate change does not support the carbon cap legislation that is being cobbled together by Mr. Gore and his Democratic allies in the U.S. Congress. Joke: Apparently, ice is really bad for you

When you drink vodka over ice, it can give you kidney failure. When you drink rum over ice, it can give you liver failure. When you drink whiskey over ice, it can give you heart problems. When you drink gin over ice, it can give you brain problems. Apparently, ice is really bad for you. Warn all your friends. Click here for a vegetarian joke.
